They've been doing some work on that intersection to make it more clear where cars should be turning. Concerns about the safety of the intersection beg this question: has there ever been a car accident there?
When a car approaches the intersection from Duncan Ave. the driver cannot see approaching cars, some of them moving well above the speed limit. I reject the argument that there has not been an accident. We should not wait until someone is seriously injured or killed by being broadsided by a car on Hudson. That is a very poor excuse for not acting.
School children crossing Duncan Avenue on Hudson are not seen either. This is another potential tragedy that needs to be avoided.
The residents of Duncan Ave. have submitted a petition to the Village Board and the Mayor with over twenty signatures. So far nothing has been done to correct the problem.
If someone has the email for the Mayor or the city DPW department, they could set up a public "watch area" on this site so that someone in the city is notified directly when issues like this are reported here.
All I have to say is it is "Russian Roulette" EVERY time I come to the end of Duncan Ave to turn left. I am so sick of this issue. It is so logically clear that their is a HUGE safety issue here. Why does it not get fixed? I have been told it is a state road so they can't put up a stop sign, blah, blah, blah. There are always excuses. My husband came up with the idea to bring out the sidewalk in front of the dentist office. What about a mirror?
Frankly, I can't believe more accidents haven't happened with traffic coming from four different streets sometimes all at once. Then, one has to just pull out of Duncan Ave. and "hope for the best". This is unnerving with a toddler/baby in the car I must say! And when you look to the right there seems to ALWAYS be a large truck/SUV parked in the last parking spot. People! Hello, can you not park your big SUV's in the last spot next to Duncan Ave on Hudson St. PLEASE! We can't see to pull out! I hope this gets remedied someday. Many of us have been working on this for a few years now with no luck.
A fast and simple solution is to make Duncan one-way uphill. If the problem is as serious as everyone says, then this should be an acceptable solution.
Another solution is to ENFORCE the 20mph caution sign which is at the approach to the intersection and/or make the school mph limit for all days, rather than just school days, as the speed limit sign is in front of St. Thomas. Even a "dangerous intersection" sign would be a help. Also, I use the windows on the jewelry shop as a mirror to see upcoming traffic to the left. But that doesn't help for traffic to the right.
Here's simple answer to the problem. Put speed bumps on 218 leading to Duncan ave. It will slow cars down dramatcially. And cost less than a traffic light.
