Horrible 4 way stop set up. Everyone just goes whenever they want. There's a lot of distance between the intersecting roads so drivers feel they can just go instead of following turn system of usual 4 way stop.
This is always a tricky intersection - but in August it's crazy ! You can assume that out-of-towners will run the stop sign, especially from Ballston Ave.
Even if a signal were added, it would still be tricky handling traffic going straight from Ballston Ave and Park Pl.
I drove this way to and from work for 2 years and no one seems to understand how a 4-way stop sign works. In this case I agree that it's likely because of the distance. Out of towners especially are sure to run right into you because they assume you're turning right (if coming from Circular), and no one ever lets anyone out of the little side street. I'd love to see something done about this.
There's plenty of room for a "round-about" at that intersection. Of course drivers would still have to THINK to use it. So, we can't possibly force that situation.
This 4 way stop drives me nuts. I don't think its just tourists- its Saratogians who don't understand the concept of a 4 way stop. Half the time cars refuse to wait until a car has passed the longer than usual distance. I would love to see a cop hiding here for a week to teach these people a lesson!
This intersection is terrible, and it's not just the tourists who don't know how to use it! I turn left there from Park Place to Circular quite often and have nearly been hit several times and honked at by overly aggressive people who don't understand stop signs even more frequently. Something needs to be done!
Doesn't need a roundabout, just somehow to get people to realize that it is a four way stop, and that EVERYONE gets a turn. I drive this every day to work and ALWAYS have an issue. Nobody ever lets you out of Park Place to take a left on Circular. Nobody. I can wait forever, or what I do is basically take my turn when it comes up and narrowly miss being hit by everyone else who just goes without any idea (or concern) that I need a turn too. I've had it. I am going to post my own sign there.
I hate this intersection.....try being a pedestrian crossing. You put your life on the line crossing NY/Saratoga streets all the time, but this one takes the cake. Maybe it's a NY thing, but it seems like everyone is in a rush to get through an intersection and they don't even care who is in the crosswalk!
A roundabout is the way to go .There is a great book titled TRAFFIC by Tom Vanderbilt that explains the flow and psychology of the driving culture. Roundabouts eliminate more dangerous T bone crashes ,and because no one likes them, everyone is forced to pay attention and slow down.Mean while traffic keeps moving at a better pace than with stop signs or traffic lights.
Saratoga could benefit from a complete reworking of it's traffic patterns using some of the principles that are in this book. Broadway would be transformed by a better, smoother flow of traffic with a more pedestrian friendly environment .
I agree this intersection is a problem. A roundabout might be a good solution but that would be very expensive. A traffic light I would think would slow traffic down too much and also be expensive. I wonder if they just "moved" the intersection "past' Park Place so that Park Place was not part of the 4-way stop, and then change the street markings and bring the stop-signs closer together into a 3-way stop, if that would help alleviate the problem. By bringing the actual intersection closer together, you might even be able to have an independent right-turn lane heading around the curve where most traffic goes anyway. Bringing the cars closer together at the stop would help alleviate confusion.
It's a simple 4 way stop. I can't believe people are even considering a $185,000 traffic signal, or even proposing the massive reconstruction of that intersection to accommodate a round a bout. How much would that cost? How about instead of investing large amounts of money to fix a NON-ISSUE (31 people complained about this out of how many people travel that route on a daily basis?), people wise up and realize that its a simple, simpleee 4 way stop. If need be post an officer there for a week and see how much a difference that makes! Or attatch those little orange flags to the stop signs like they do when they put up new signs to draw attention to the fact its a 4 way stop. Seems a lot simpler and easier than installing a traffic light, or even the dreaded round a bout that we have been lucky enough to avoid so far in Saratoga.
The fact to the matter is, people are stupid and don't know how to follow a 4-way stop. This is only worse during the tourist season. I can't tell you how many times I have been headed straight through towards Lincoln Avenue when the car coming from Broadway would start to go through -- they don't seem to realize you can go straight, not just right. The only reason I have not gotten hit is because I ANTICIPATE that they are going to do that, but not everyone will know to do that. So yes, it's ridiculous that public dollars need to be spent because people don't know how a 4-way stop sign works, but that doesn't change the reality that it is a dangerous, awkward intersection. A cop there every once in a while might help and may be a cheaper solution, but only if they actually stop people.
Why has the city not yet adressed this issue? They recently adressed an issue at the intersection of Spring St & Nelson Ave. which I have not seen posted here at See Click Fix. This intersection is very dangerous and frequently people will not let the CDTA bus turn onto Circular St. even if the bus had the right of way. Pedestrians are also in danger since they are not being given a chance to cross the street safely.
Comments have been made that this is a "simple 4 way stop". Well it is a 4 way stop but it is not simple. People do not recognize the car trying to turn from Park onto Circular. I also saw a car turning left from Whitney Pl. onto Circular and was almost broadsided. If you try and go straight from Circular heading south onto Whtiney Pl., BE Careful! People do not understand the rules and are not patient or thoughful. Maybe additional signage that states - 4 way stop instead of All way stop. Or maybe the police should sit out there for a week and just hand out tickets. If people don't know the rules they should visit http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/dmanual/default.html and refresh their knowledge.
New Public Safety Commisioner Mathiesen seems not to give a care about this intersection yet he has to put his 2 cents in on the Glemore post. I have a feeling this will never be resolved even though it has 2 posts for it and a total of nearly 80 or more people wanting this issue resolved. This issue was first reported over 2 years ago.
i agree something has to be done and police need to enforce this 4 way stop about a month ago i was on park pl and it was my turn i started to proceed with my left and some guy just went and we almost collided the sad part is there was a patrol car two cars behind me and he/she did nothing
I guess the city think that the Gilbert Rd. & Rte. 29E intersection is more important than this one which I find to be very sad as there area few hundred persons voting in favor to remedy this issue over 4 or 4 threads on this website.
Regarding Public Safety Commisioner Mathiesen latest plan for this interesection:
Make Park Place, between Circular and Regent, one way headed away from Congress Park. This will improve traffic flow and avoid the temptation of illegal left hand turns that will create a dangerous situation.
