A traffic circle would be an awesome way to calm traffic. Berkeley has a ton of them and if you put flowers in the middle of the circle, they make quite a lovely piece of street beautification. For example: http://www.mishalov.com/23apr10/traffic....

If a traffic circle isn't possible, then maybe make it a one way street since the street south of York turns into a small two way going north and south. Cars get hit in that area between Curtola and Georgia St.
