This could be an inviting pedestrian link between new destinations in Nolo, September in Bangkok, and Boiling Soho—grounded establishments of Christopher Martins and D'Legna—and old staples in Goodfellas, L'Orcio, and Modern. St. Stanislaus is a beautiful church in the middle of them all, and Bradley Street Bike Co-op is a community hub. An art project for the walls of the underpass would liven up the area and bring the consistent foot traffic that these places need to thrive.

We are a group of neighbors who want to paint a mural on the walls of the Trumbull Street underpass on State Street. The site is an underutilized threshold between two neighborhoods, and we believe that injecting color, light, and cleanliness to it will make it more used and loved. The proposed name of the project is "Colorful State".

There's this part under the bridge that they don't seem to be using for anything - it's flat-ish, long, and low. I'm not sure what else it could be used for, but maybe a skate park? I don't think there's one on this side of town.

    This Could Be Scantlebury Skateparklet.

    From the application to http://couldbefund.com:

"Our project is a skateboarding parklette built within Scantlebury Park, intended to use skateboarding to connect the New Haven residents with the Yale community in an equitable way. Historically, the two communities have been separated both physically and socially. In providing a new space at the apex of several New Haven neighborhoods and Yale’s campus, this project offers a new opportunity for these communities to come together. Moreover, it positions the communities as equals. The project would be a joint venture between Yale University (The Yale Undergraduate Skateboarding Union & Schwarzman Center) and citizens of New Haven and be developed by both Yale personnel and New Haven residents. "

"Our project requires approximately 4,000 square feet of unused city land on Scantlebury Park. In addition, we will require a contractor and/or designer with experience in skatepark design and construction. We are currently working to gain the assistance of one or more members of the Yale School of Architecture to collaborate and assist on our final park design.

Both the Scantlebury Park location and skateboarding culture hold unique potential for accomplishing our goals because they exist at the intersection of dynamic communities of place and of practice. The park is situated in Dixwell, one of the city’s more underserved neighborhoods, while also on the frontier of Yale’s campus. Culturally, skateboarding is the nucleus of a creative community that values design, painting, photography, film, music and entrepreneurship, along with athletic expression. Geographically and culturally, this project offers a community space with uncommonly low barriers to entry and many thereof. "

    A mural.

Every year thousands of fish migrate up the Mill River each day to breed. This phenomena attracts a variety of gorgeous birds. We want to depict this under the highway bridge.

The attached photo is an example of the work of the artist ARCY, that the applicants would like to work with. For local example see mural on the side of the Stack at the District.

This Could Be a Rainbow Lit Underpass

"Humphrey Street is an important connection between eastrock and fair haven. The Mill River Trail crosses Humphrey and continues under the Amtrac overpass. This overpass is foreboding and inhibits connection between neighborhoods. The development of the Mill River Trail and District create an opportunity to remedy this uban blemish. We can change a scary dark underpass into a brilliant rainbow colored one. The project will take many colored led flood lights and mount them in the pedestrian lane. Ideally these will change according to a programed routine. We will encourage stakeholders to make improvements to the experience walking through the underpass. "

Right across from Gateway, there's a big blank beige wall, that makes it a little less pleasant to walk down this block, especially at night. I think it would be a great spot for someone to propose a mural design and maybe the business or owner would want to kick in for it.

This is one of four site locations suggested for Open Walls NHV, an outdoor exhibition of murals throughout Downtown made possible by collaboration between private property owners and local artists and volunteers.

Here's more about the project from their application to http://CouldBeFund.com

"Town Green District would like to sponsor Open Walls NHV, an outdoor exhibition of murals throughout Downtown made possible by collaboration between private property owners and local artists and volunteers. The mural project will transform four nondescript walls into colorful, original artworks, which will help redefine the area and stimulate civic pride. The selected walls are highly visible to both pedestrians and vehicular traffic, and once transformed by paint, the murals will encourage people to pause and appreciate the displayed local talent. With the combined seed funding from Town Green District and ECIC, a call for proposals from illustrators, painters, and designers can be launched, and community volunteers corralled to create public art that will enhance the cultural and visual vibrancy of the Downtown business district."

"We have identified four exposed walls that are highly visible in Downtown. Once the murals are finished, public art will face those travelling by car and foot on George Street, Chapel Street, Court Street, and Audubon Street. The wall sizes range from 72 to approximately 2,955 sq.ft, and all will be cleaned and prepared with a first coat of sealant. Working from top to bottom, a hired team of OSHA-compliant professionals trained in painting from scissor lifts will outline and paint the artwork, and then community volunteers will help the selected local artists paint the remaining portion of their design closest to the ground. To our fortune, the walls rise above open lots and parking lots, where gathering and artist talks can be held in celebration of the murals. Town Green District will work with artists and painter teams to establish liability insurance for the project. "
